Could GLP-1s be performance enhancing?
The BBC has an interesting article on whether GLP-1 and related drugs such as Mounjaro / Zepbound, should be treated as an unfair advantage. Building off Serena Williams use of the drug before her return to pro tennis it asks whether there's any advantage to be found in these kind of peptides.
At the risk of a spoiler, the answer from the experts is basically 'we're not sure'.
While losing weight may be advantageous for some, losing muscle won't be. And as one expert pointed out, it's hard enough to get athletes to fuel properly as is, reducing their hunger is not going to help with that either.
We should probably apologise for the number of GLP-1 posts we make but the landscape around them is changing rapidly. It's probably about to change again with the likely release of Retatrutide which is a 'triple-agonist' targeting three different receptors: GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon.
A point the article makes, that we also seem to be making a lot, is just how normalised these drugs, not to mention self injection, has become.
We're just flagging it as it's a fascinating field of investigation that's going to get crazier as all the other peptides become more available and normalised.
Hang onto your hats people, things are about to get interesting.
