Sustainability Isn’t a Feature. It’s the Minimum.
Sustainability Baked In From The Beginning
We didn’t build TOTEMIC and then figure out how to make it sustainable. We didn’t build TOTEMIC and then figure out how to eliminate the plastic. Both were baked in from the start. Or we weren't doing it at all.
There was no way we were going to ship 30 plastic sachets a month, per customer, out into the world.
So we held off launching until we could source fully certified home-compostable sachets. We repeatedly refused 'recyclable' options that were, in reality, nothing of the sort.
Our Compostable Packaging Explained
What we eventually decided on was a TUV certified home compostable sachet. We eliminated any plastic pinch zips (recycling 'mare), air valves or anything else. This simplicity means the sachets are as low impact as possible. We even checked the flood varnish needed to seal the ink didn't change the composability.
We then sourced fully compostable labels to put on them and tracked down a biodegradable glue to stick them with.
The sachets are actually made from cellulose from trees sourced from responsible forests. Just in case you wondered.
The best way to dispose of them is cut them into smaller strips and add to your home compost or food/green recycling bin.
Reducing Plastic & Material Impact
We eliminated as much plastic as possible from our process, even using steel machinery over plastic wherever we could. We have a steel shaker bottle on the way too, helping cut plastic from your routine. (it's not 100% plastic-free yet, but we’re working on it.)
We sourced recycled pulp postal boxes and packing tape that was recycleable. Mainly was we knew all that regular tape on boxes made it unrecyclable in any straightforward way.
We're trying to get them delivered in the most efficient way possible, but this is an ongoing project.
Simplicity, As Always
We figured good business should help people make good choices. So we made the best choice the easiest one.
Our drive to simplify everything really helped here too. Less waste. Less guilt. Fewer compromises. Basically, fewer bad vibes all round.
We chose to do it right because, selfishly, we feel better for it.
We hope you feel better consuming it.
And, if that wasn't enough, here's a much deeper dive on plastics and supplement if you want more info.
So, if routine serenity and plastic free simplicity is your thing, let's go.
