The TOTEMIC Journal– Smarter fuel. Better ideas.
From the reading list: Daniel Lieberman - Exercised
You may have seen this book popping up around the internet as it seems to have had a recent bump in visibility for some reason. We're all for it though, it's a super interesting read if you have any interest in physiology, evolution or your body in general.
One of the great things about this book is that you don't need to be a fitness or health nut to enjoy it. And it probably helps that it was written by someone who's interest in the esoterica of modern online fitness voodoo starts and stops with putting on his shoes and getting out for a run. We also doubt he cares much for carbon plates in his shoes or calf compression sleeves. In many ways it's a walk (jog?) through evolution navigated via fitness related topics.
Extra points for coining the term 'Exercists' for those evangelical exercisers - though we did feel slightly smeared...
If we're honest, we found the first 30% a bit slow but the rest a really enjoyable read. So. Much. Sense. Like the fact that doing any kind of exercise unnecessarily would have been fatal for humans for 10s of thousands of years. So, if you find it pretty hard to stick to a routine you can also blame evolution. We said hard though, not impossible. He also points out all the myriad more fatal side effects of a sedentary lifestyle on modern humans.
It reads a bit like a favorite uncle gently encouraging you to take better care of yourself. There's zero guilt induction or preaching, just a calm laying out of cause and effect. Something many of us could probably do with learning.
