From The Reading List - Born To Move by By Kelly and Juliet Starrett
We’ve been Kelly Starrett fans for years. Ever since first hearing him on a podcast more than a decade ago, we’ve made time for him whenever he appears.
He’s probably best known for Becoming a Supple Leopard, which felt genuinely radical when it landed: mobility and flexibility, framed not as an afterthought, but as essential for strength, longevity, and injury prevention.
His newer book, Built to Move, is a more accessible entry point. If you want to age well, move better, and enjoy living in your body a bit more, this is a pretty good place to start.
However, this is not a book for advanced mobility obsessives. It’s a practical 101. He walks through simple movement tests and exercises you can use to assess where you are, then improve and maintain function over time.
On reading it we were struck by how close it is to a basic yoga practice. Different language, slightly different framing, but many of the same patterns are there. In fact, it was obviously so close that there's a section in the book detailing why it's not actually the same as yoga. But it, kinda, is. So if you’re new to mobility work, or wondering why opening your hips and restoring range matters, this is a useful companion. If you're feeling like a smug yogi right now we'll point you at this other very good book. (Probably not reviewing that one here, but check it out.)
It also touches on diet, though nothing here will shock you: eat fresh food, eat more plants, keep it simple.
Our only real criticism is that it occasionally feels like a long magazine feature stretched into a book. But that may be because we’ve spent a lot of time around this subject already.
Still, for beginners, it's an easy and effective on-ramp. No circus tricks, no contortionism, just practical advice for building a more capable body.
So probably a 4/5 for the beginner. If you can already lick your kneecaps you may want to look elsewhere.
Plus a little extra for the skiers out there: Kelly gets into prep and ski mobility on this pod. It's an interesting listen.
