Mix It Up for a Longer Life
This is an interesting study.
We've always been advocates of multi-mode mobility, mainly for of fun and avoiding boredom. And if you can nail that pair you're much more likely to stick to and enjoy your activities.
But a study just out of Harvard suggests that that approach is also better for your health. So if you do various different types of movement across the week, cross-training, basically, then you're probably going to have a better outcome than your mate advocating for 3 x 3hour road rides a week.
We tend to think specialising is fine for Olympians, but the rest of us are probably better off with a varied exercise diet. The finding here seem to support that.
It's not even by a small margin. The people with the most variety had about a 19 % lower chance of dying early compared with people who had the least variety. Basically, if you are spending 7 hours a week moving, it pays to vary the kinds of exercise to get the maximum benefit of those 7 hours. Increased efficiency, if you like, and we're here for that.
So get out there and mix it up.
